What is Sciatica in Spokane Valley WA?
Sciatica, also refereed to as Lumbar Radiulopathy is pain that runs the length of the Sciatic Nerve. The sciatic nerve is one of the largest nerves in the human body, extending from the bottom of the spinal cord through the back of the thigh and dividing above the knee joint. Irritation to the sciatic nerve can lead to pain, numbness, or tingling in the lower extremity or legs. This is called sciatica. Normally, sciatica affects just one side of the body. The pain can vary from a burning sensation, mild ache or sharp painful sensation. Some patients may even experience muscle weakness, tingling or numbness in their leg or foot. If left untreated, Sciatic Nerve Irritation can lead to muscle wasting of the leg, numbness, and constant tingling down to the tip of the toes and eventually even loss of bladder control and sexual dysfunction. The intense pain can rapidly wear you down and drain the joy out of life.
What causes of Sciatic Nerve Pain or Lumbar Radiculopathy?
The most common cause of Lumbar Radiculopathy also known as Sciatica is a herniated or bulging disk pressing on the sciatic nerve. Many people living with herniated discs do so unknowingly, and continue to live pain free life. However, when a disk protrudes enough to irritate the Sciatic nerve, it can cause mild to intense pain along the sciatic pathway.
Pinched nerves can occur from a sudden injury or from everyday daily activities. Spinal stenosis is another root cause of sciatica. Spinal stenosis causes nerve passageways to constrict and is most common in elderly patients. Pregnancy may also lead to sciatic irritation. It is most common in the second and third trimesters when the growing baby puts additional pressure on the sciatic nerve. In general, prolonged sitting or sudden movements such as a cough or sneeze can aggravate sciatic pain.
